Take a deeper dive into the materials and processes behind ceramic glazes with glaze chemistry whiz and Instructor Marc Egan. Our Glaze Chemistry for Potters course is designed for potters who want to move beyond using studio and commercial glazes and start understanding and mixing their own.

Over 8 weeks, you’ll learn how glazes are built from the ground up, working directly with raw materials to mix, test, and refine a wide range of surfaces. We’ll cover the essentials of glaze chemistry, including silica, alumina, and fluxes, and introduce tools like the unity molecular formula to help you better understand and adjust your results.

Each week combines short lectures with hands-on lab time. You’ll mix and test a variety of glaze types, run material and ratio tests, explore surface variations, and develop your own glaze recipes. We’ll also cover application techniques, firing, common glaze faults, and what makes a glaze stable and food safe.

This is a process-focused course with lots of testing, note-taking, and iteration. Ideal for curious potters who want to build confidence working with materials and take more control over their surfaces.

Some pottery experience is recommended.

Materials & Safety
All materials for testing and experiments are provided during class. At the end of the course, students can choose to mix a batch of their preferred glaze to take home. Because material costs vary by recipe and batch size, this final glaze is not included in the course fee. Fees for a 1000 g batch typically range from $20 and up calculated based on the glaze materials.

Important: Students are required to bring their own N95 or half-face respirator with filter for safe handling of dry glaze materials.

Terms & Conditions | Important! Please read

  • Adults Only (kinda): Our classes are made for adults. But if you’ve got a 16-year-old who’s basically an old soul, email us!
  • Refunds & Cancellations: We don't offer refunds (small business realities!), but you can read how we handle reschedules and store credits in our “Refund Policy”.
  • Make-up Classes: Life happens! Check out our “Make-Up Class Policy” and we’ll do what we can to accommodate you.
  • Photography: We LOVE showing off student work. By joining us, you’re giving us the green light to photograph your pieces. Details in our Photography Policy in Section 10 under “Terms of Service”.
  • Flexible Lesson Plans: Your teacher might adjust the plan depending on class interest - we want the class to reflect what you want to learn. You’re here to get the most out of your time (and your money).
  • Clean up: The final 20–30 minutes of each class are for cleanup. It’s all part of being in a shared studio and keeping the space ready for the next makers (and not to mention good pottery karma).

Make sure you’ve opted into our emails - otherwise, you might miss important class info like studio access codes, schedules, and important updates about your class/ workshop.
