Unlock new creative possibilities in ceramics with our comprehensive Mold-Making 101 course. This hands-on class will guide you through the process of designing and creating plaster molds for both slip casting and press molding techniques. You’ll learn how to craft one-part and two-part molds, make decorative sprig molds, and combine slip-cast pieces into finished ceramic forms. This course is best for those with some hand-building experience.
Throughout the course, you'll explore:
- The fundamentals of plaster and its use in mold-making.
- Techniques for creating and using press molds and sprig molds.
- How to design and construct two-part molds for more complex shapes.
- The basics of slip casting and assembling multi-part pieces.
- Finishing techniques to prepare your work for firing and glazing.
What you'll take home:
- Your Molds of course!
- 1 - 3 Slip cast pieces of each mold you complete
Please note:
1) Glazing is not part of this course. You can book a glazing session seperately ($50) by emailing the technician at our Dupont Location. Glazing sessions include the use of our studio glazes. Firing fee is included.
2) Due to the hands-on and cumulative nature of this course, it's important to attend each session as we may not be able to repeat material covered in a missed class in a thorough way although we will try to catch you up.
3) By the end of the course, you'll have developed a new set of skills, a collection of unique molds, and the confidence to continue exploring mold-making in your own creative practice.
