Join us for a two-day workshop with ceramic artist Eiko Maeda, exploring the traditional Japanese technique of Nerikomi. Unlike surface decoration, Nerikomi builds pattern directly into the clay body itself, layering, stacking, and folding differently coloured clays until intricate designs run through the material from edge to edge.
Over two days, you'll learn to prepare and condition coloured clays, build your own pattern blocks and work through four distinct pattern designs, each resulting in a finished ceramic piece approximately 15 cm in diameter. Eiko will guide you through every stage, from initial slab to shaped, refined form.
This workshop is open to makers at all levels. No prior experience with Nerikomi is required, though some familiarity with hand-building is an asset.
ABOUT EIKO MAEDA
Eiko Maeda trained in Japanese lacquer at Joshibi University of Art and Design in Tokyo before discovering ceramics after relocating to Canada. She has spent over a decade developing and teaching her Nerikomi practice from her studio in Ontario, and has been recognized by the Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair. In 2026, her work was exhibited in Taipei, Taiwan.

Firing is included in the registration fee. Finished works will be available for pick-up approximately 3–4 weeks after the workshop concludes. You will be notified by email when your pieces are ready.
All Specialty tools will be available for usage with the option to purchase your tools at the end of the course.

- Flexible Lesson Plans: Your teacher might adjust the plan depending on class interest - we want the class to reflect what you want to learn. You’re here to get the most out of your time (and your money).
- Clean up: The final 20–30 minutes of each class are for cleanup. It’s all part of being in a shared studio and keeping the space ready for the next makers (and not to mention good pottery karma).
