Ever wanted to get your hands on beautiful terracotta clay? Build a pot way bigger than your usual one. Cover your work in fun, expressive surface decoration? This six-week specialty course with Emma Bickers is your chance to do all three.
You'll work with a gorgeous low-fire red earthenware and handbuild 2 (maybe 3) large-scale pots, learning the techniques that let you push your forms bigger and bolder. Once they're built, it's time to decorate. Emma will introduce you to her illustrative approach to surface decoration using terra sigillata and low-fire glazes.

Your two pots
You'll likely have both on the go at the same time.
Think of pot one as your practice run at a smaller scale, with a limit of 12 inches wide by 12 inches tall. This is where you'll get to know terra sigillata and start adding glaze detail straight onto raw, unfired clay.
Pot two is the big one. Keep it under 14 inches wide and go as tall as you like, up to 24 inches. Our kiln is 27 inches inside, so 24 is the real ceiling once shelves and clearance are accounted for.
Open to makers of all levels, but some hand-building experience is an asset. This is likely unsuitable for absolute beginners

- Flexible Lesson Plans: Your teacher might adjust the plan depending on class interest - we want the class to reflect what you want to learn. You’re here to get the most out of your time (and your money).
- Clean up: The final 20–30 minutes of each class are for cleanup. It’s all part of being in a shared studio and keeping the space ready for the next makers (and not to mention good pottery karma).
